This Daniel Island Home is Where Architecture Meets the Marsh

Landscape Architect J.R. Kramer of REMARK Landscape Architecture envisioned the outdoors of this Daniel Island modern home as a series of interconnected destinations rather than isolated yards. Inside, Construction Resources helped translate a highly complex marble vision into reality.

Perched along Ralston Creek on Daniel Island, this contemporary residence was designed as a seamless dialogue between architecture and landscape. Created by Thomas & Denzinger Architects and built by SHELTER Custom-Built Living, the home is composed of interconnected pavilions linked by breezeways that frame marsh views, preserve mature live oaks, and blur the line between indoors and out. Every decision, from the home’s orientation to its carefully framed sightlines, reflects the homeowners’ travels, passions, and family life while embracing the beauty of the Lowcountry.

That philosophy extends well beyond the walls of the home. Landscape architect J.R. Kramer of REMARK Landscape Architecture approached the property as an experience. 

“We designed a modern landscape that functions as a private retreat for the homeowners,” Kramer said. “Whether gathering around the fire, playing bocce or tennis, or simply enjoying the grounds, subtle pathways guide movement from one space to the next.” 

Those transitions are intentionally softened by layers of native and carefully selected non-invasive plantings, creating what Kramer describes as “a sense of discovery and connection throughout the property.”

The landscape itself echoes the home’s contemporary architecture. In collaboration with the builder, Kramer extended architectural elements into the site, using tall hedges to define outdoor rooms while reinforcing the home’s strong vertical lines. The driveway curves to mirror the surrounding tree canopy, and a green roof above the garage doubles as a balcony, strengthening the conversation between structure and site. 

“The design intention begins at the curb,” Kramer said. It creates a cohesive arrival that feels both modern and unmistakably Lowcountry.

That same sense of intention continues indoors, where every room balances bold architecture with warmth and livability. Custom millwork, sculptural lighting, and thoughtfully curated furnishings complement expansive walls of glass that keep the marsh landscape in constant view. The result is an interior that celebrates craftsmanship through timeless materials while making everyday living and entertaining feel effortless.

Among the home’s most dramatic features is its extensive use of natural stone, supplied by Construction Resources. The homeowners envisioned marble not as an accent but as a defining architectural element, requiring an extraordinary level of planning to ensure the veining flowed seamlessly throughout the home. To bring that vision to life, the team traveled to Italy to hand-select 106 slabs cut from the same stone blocks, ensuring remarkable continuity from one space to the next.

Nowhere is that craftsmanship more apparent than in the kitchen. SHELTER Custom-Built Living constructed a geometric frame for an oversized island that Construction Resources clad in Calacatta Viola Super Extra marble before extending the stone across a matching range hood and full-height backsplash. 

A pair of 13-foot marble-clad pivot doors conceals the adjoining scullery, allowing the kitchen to transform into a continuous stone composition when closed. It’s a striking example of the collaboration and precision that define every aspect of this remarkable home, from the first impression at the curb to the final detail inside.
