Story by Micaela Arnett / July 18, 2024

One Coast Design embraced the novelty of Summerville’s Coburn-Hutchinson House and reimagined it through a classic lens that reads collected, charming, and coastal. The origins of the home’s architecture are honored through an interior scheme that leans into the period and boasts character with heart and soul.

Kitchen

She maximizes her cozy kitchen by swapping out fixtures and finishes for classic styles and updating the paint color based on her evaluation of the space’s natural light exposure. She chooses colorways that harmonize with her fabric and furniture selections, taking into account size, scale, and some feng shui principles. “It’s an oasis filled with my favorite things,” she says.

Dining Room

She showcases her stunning mantle designs, classic window treatments with elegant hardware, and drapery systems that complement the rest of her design through her home’s four fireplaces and half a dozen French doors leading to the side porches. She uses collected art, family heirlooms, antiques, and travel finds to weave a story within this space.

Foyer

Her decorative vision shines through in the built-in charm of her older home, resembling a storybook setting. “I aimed to achieve a jewel box effect with pieces that fit this space perfectly. Think of Goldilocks, who wanted everything just right,” she says. “I love refreshing cherished pieces I own if their scale and style work. This way, I can fall in love with them over again.”

Side Porch

The long porches stretching the house’s entire length capture the sea breezes perfectly. Michelle arranges plenty of relaxed seating and adds outdoor drapery for privacy, making it easy for guests to enjoy ‘porch life’ with free-flowing conversations. She paints the beadboard ceiling in ‘haint blue,’ adding a beautiful railing system, fans, and party lights to give the porches a wonderful evening glow.
