In the world of home renovation, balancing history with contemporary function requires a skilled and thoughtful approach. Architect Joy Martin of Joy Architecture + Interior Design took on this challenge when tasked with updating a 1924 home to better serve a growing family with three teenagers. A blend of historic preservation and modern updates creates a vibrant, livable design that honors both past and present.
The renovation’s goal was twofold: to enhance the home’s functionality while maintaining its historic charm. To achieve this, every detail was meticulously planned to ensure that the new seamlessly integrated with the old.
With Joy Martin’s keen eye for detail and expertise in historic renovations, this home now offers a vibrant living experience that seamlessly bridges history and contemporary design.
The design transforms the original sunroom into a functional mudroom, complete with a closet and powder room on the main floor. Exotic wallpaper, custom cabinetry, and a one-of-a-kind sink create a joyful, practical area.
This three-level addition includes a basement bedroom, sunroom with views, and a primary suite with a Juliet balcony. The design reconfigures the three second-floor bedrooms to improve circulation and optimize space.
